Book Review: Polar Bear by Norbert Rosing

December 21, 2018
Polar Bear is a beautiful book about Norbert Rosing’s travel to the Arctic Circle. Filled with stunning photographs of the animals, the book is about how Rosing went to the Arctic with his dogs and something amazing happened. This mum tells us how the book got her son to think very differently about the world and conservation!
My little one is an aquatic being. Before becoming a parent I have only seen kids that threw tantrums to avoid a bath. My little one is totally the opposite. He would be in the water happily for hours together. His love for water in my eyes looked anti-environmental. It was unbearable for me when he was playing in our bathtub and I saw how much water filled the tub. He was too young to understand the concept of conservation or global warming. When things get hard for conversation, I pick a book that could do it with ease.
I looked not for books with facts but for emotions that a child could relate to. And I'm thankful for Norbert Rosings 'Polar bear'. This title from Katha Books unexpectedly turned out to be the book I was looking for.

A heart-warming narrative

In Polar Bear by Norbert Rosing, the photographer is out in the Arctic with his dogs. Suddenly, he sees a large polar bear, and he is worried about his dog. But then something astonishing and unexpected happens.
With a few clicks, the author and photographer, Norbert Rosing, take us to the Arctic, the house of polar bears. His photographs are full of emotions. How often do we get to see an unlikely bond of friendship between animals? The fact that a polar bear really longs for a bond, speaks for how much our usage has affected its surroundings and challenged its survival.

More than just a story

We loved the timely captures, simple lines, and the fun facts page. This is my son's second Katha book after Tigers Forever and I would treasure these two even after he outgrows the picture book phase!
Some books entertain, some books educate, but very few books shape our character and our outlook on the world. This is one such book for my son. After this book, he became very empathetic and responsible. I couldn't believe it. All he needed was a Mascot to reinforce his conservationist side. Why didn't I think of it earlier? Polar Bear is perfect for preschoolers. In fact, it is a must-have book for animal lovers of any age!
