Understanding Hindi Scripts: A Quick Guide for Parents

Hindi books come in different formats — here's how to choose what's right for your child:

  • Devanagari (हिंदी script) — The native script of Hindi. Great for children learning to read Hindi formally, or heritage learners building fluency. Best if your child attends Hindi school or you read Hindi at home.
  • Romanized / Transliterated — Hindi words written in the English alphabet (e.g., "Namaste" instead of नमस्ते). Ideal for families who speak Hindi at home but haven't taught the script yet — kids can say the words even before they can read Devanagari.
  • Bilingual (English + Hindi) — Both languages side-by-side. Perfect for building vocabulary and confidence in two languages simultaneously. A popular starting point for diaspora families.
  • Audio-supported — Pairs with recordings or read-alouds to reinforce pronunciation.

Not sure where to start? Romanized titles are great first steps for heritage speakers. Devanagari titles are recommended once a child knows the alphabet.
